Family Board Game
Official Game Rules & How to Play
Master the board with this complete guide to game mechanics, rules, and winning tactics.
1. Game Objective & Overview
Family Board Game is a turn-based cross-and-circle strategy game for 2, 3, or 4 players. Each player controls a color-coded set of 4 pawns (Yellow, Red, Blue, or Green). The ultimate goal of the game is to navigate all four of your pawns around the outer path of the 5×5 grid board and bring them safely to the center home tile before your opponents.
2. Board Architecture & Path Layout
The game board consists of a 5×5 matrix featuring 25 specialized tiles:
- Starting Areas (Bases): Located at the corners of the board where each player's pawns begin.
- Outer Track Tiles: White path tiles forming the outer perimeter of the board where pawns travel clockwise.
- Safe Star Tiles (Resting Zones): Designated tiles marked with safe star indicators. Opponents cannot capture pieces resting on a safe tile.
- Home Track & Destination: The central column/row leading to the center tile (Tile #25), where pieces are safely retired.
3. Dice Rolling & Turn Flow
Players take turns rolling a standard 6-sided die in clockwise rotation:
- Turn Prompt: The turn indicator displays whose turn it is to roll. Click or tap the die to roll.
- Legal Moves: After rolling, any piece that can move forward by the exact dice value will be highlighted.
- Single Legal Move Auto-Selection: If only one piece can legally move, the game automatically advances it for seamless play.
- Multiple Legal Moves: If multiple pieces can move, tap the piece on the board you wish to advance.
- No Legal Moves: If a player rolls a number that cannot be legally played by any of their pieces (e.g. piece would exceed the final home tile), the turn immediately passes to the next player.
4. Special Dice Rules & Extra Turns
Players are granted bonus dice rolls under specific game conditions:
- Rolling a 6: Rolling a 6 grants an immediate extra turn!
- Consecutive Sixes Rule: To prevent infinite loops, rolling two consecutive 6s caps the subsequent roll so a 3rd consecutive 6 cannot occur.
- Capturing an Opponent: Successfully knocking an opponent piece off the board awards an immediate bonus roll.
- Reaching Home: Successfully guiding a piece to the final home tile awards an immediate bonus roll.
5. Captures & Safe Space Mechanics
Capturing opponent pieces is a key tactical element of Family Board Game:
- Capturing: When a piece lands on an outer track tile occupied by an opponent's piece, the opponent piece is captured ("KILLED!") and returned back to its starting base (Step 1).
- Safe Star Exception: If an opponent piece is sitting on a Safe Star tile, landing on the same tile does NOT capture it. Both pieces safely co-exist on the tile.
- Same-Color Stacking: Pieces of the same player can occupy the same tile together.
6. Player Count Variants (2P, 3P, 4P)
- 2 Players: Players control opposing corners (Yellow vs Red), resulting in direct head-to-head competition.
- 3 Players: Players control Yellow, Blue, and Red corners, creating dynamic triangular strategy.
- 4 Players: Full board action featuring Yellow, Blue, Red, and Green teams battling for supremacy.
7. Winning the Game & Leaderboards
As players successfully move all 4 pawns to the center home tile, they receive 1st place, 2nd place, and 3rd place rankings. The game concludes when only one player remains, triggering the celebratory Game Over modal and fireworks visual display!
