Introduction
Welcome to Family Board Game! Whether you are a casual player looking to pass the time with family on a single smartphone or an experienced strategist organizing online tournaments with friends across the world, this step-by-step guide will walk you through everything from signing in to making your first winning move.
Step 1: Signing In & Player Account Setup
When you first open Family Board Game, you will be presented with the authentication screen:
- Sign In / Register: Create a free account using your email and password, or use Continue with Google for instant single-click sign-in.
- Why Sign In? Signing in preserves your custom display name, saves your active local matches so you can resume later, and grants secure token access to online multiplayer rooms.
Step 2: Choosing Your Game Mode
From the Main Menu, you can select between two distinct game modes:
- Local Match (Pass-and-Play): Ideal for playing with friends sitting in the same room. All players take turns on a single shared device. No internet connection is needed after the page has loaded!
- Play with Friends (Online Multiplayer): Ideal for remote play. Create a room to get a unique 5-character Room Code, or enter an existing code to join a friend's room.
Step 3: Selecting Player Count & Custom Names
After selecting your game mode:
- Select the number of players: 2 Players, 3 Players, or 4 Players.
- Enter custom names for each player so everyone can identify their pawns on the board.
- Click Next (or Start Game in online mode once all players have joined).
Step 4: Understanding the Game Board
The canvas renders a 5×5 interactive board consisting of 25 distinct tiles:
- Player Colors: Player 1 is Yellow (bottom right), Player 2 is Blue (top right), Player 3 is Red (top left), and Player 4 is Green (bottom left).
- Starting Bases: Each player starts with 4 pawns inside their corner base.
- Outer Track: The 24 outer tiles form a continuous clockwise path that pawns must traverse.
- Safe Star Tiles: Designated tiles featuring white stars. Pawns resting on these tiles cannot be captured by opponent pieces.
- Center Home Tile: The final destination (Tile #25) at the center of the board.
Step 5: Rolling the Dice & Moving Pieces
Gameplay proceeds in clockwise turn order:
- When your turn is active, your player badge will glow and the dice panel will prompt you to roll.
- Click or tap the Roll button to roll the die (1 through 6).
- If only one of your pawns can legally move by that dice roll, it will advance automatically!
- If multiple pawns can legally move, they will glow on the board—simply tap the pawn you want to advance.
Step 6: Captures, Safe Tiles & Extra Turns
Add excitement to your strategy with captures and bonus rolls:
- Capturing: Landing on a tile occupied by an opponent's pawn knocks them off the board back to their starting base, and awards you an immediate EXTRA TURN!
- Safe Stars: Pawns on safe star tiles are protected from capture. Multiple players can share safe tiles simultaneously.
- Rolling a 6: Rolling a 6 grants an immediate extra roll! Note: If you roll 6 twice in a row, your third roll is capped between 1–5 to maintain game balance.
- Reaching Home: Successfully moving a pawn to the center home tile awards an immediate extra turn!
Step 7: Winning the Match
The first player to safely guide all 4 of their pawns to the center home tile wins 1st Place! Remaining players continue battling for 2nd and 3rd place until the match concludes. When the game ends, a celebratory Game Over dialog appears with fireworks animations and a full leaderboard summary!
